A plain definition
Corporate public relations is the work of earning media coverage and public understanding for a company: announcing milestones, explaining what the business does, and building relationships with the reporters, editors, producers and podcast hosts who cover its field. Unlike advertising, the coverage is earned, so it carries the credibility of an independent outlet.
In Susan von Seggern's practice, corporate PR is media relations first. She identifies the outlets that matter to a client, pitches them steadily, issues press releases for significant milestones, answers journalist requests that match the client's expertise, and uses events to create moments worth covering.
